Status: Critical (Windows 10 computers)
Effect: Potential Loss of Data
What you need to do: If your computer is asking to install updates, do NOT do so at this time.
Please pass this around your office and to family/friends who may use Windows 10.
The latest major update for Windows 10 from Microsoft (1809 Fall Update) has been reported to be deleting all files from Documents and other folders on the local computer.
Microsoft has paused the rollout of Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809), the latest version of the Windows 10 operating system, which Microsoft released on the week of Tuesday, October 2. In a support document updated yesterday, October 6, the Redmond-based OS maker said, “We have paused the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) for all users as we investigate isolated reports of users missing some files after updating”.
Our recommendation, for now, is to NOT install the v1809 until Microsoft resolves the issue. Once we feel confident that the issue is resolved we will notify you, so you may proceed with updating your systems.
A note to our Managed Services partners. We have disabled the installation of v1809 for 90 days as a precautionary step. Other updates that we have deemed necessary and safe will continue to roll out automatically.
Thank you for taking the time to read this bulletin and we will keep you posted on further updates.
3 Ways Managed IT Services Can Save Your Business Money
What are your major business goals for this year? A few examples that come to mind may include increasing your efficiency and profitability—and your IT environment can play a large role in that. Yet many modern businesses struggle with IT budget constraints and staffing. If these challenges sound familiar, there is a way to overcome them with managed IT services. Let’s dive into three ways managed services can save your business precious time and money.
1. Proactive Service and Technology
If your staff is over-burdened dealing with technology problems, it’s taking time and attention away from bettering and growing your business. However, managed services are built upon proactivity, meaning regular updates, security patches, and performance checks are ongoing. Automation has proven to cut costs and increase productivity in many areas including IT. MSP’s can easily cut costs, increase security and increase productivity by automating many of the daily tasks and duties that were once reliant upon the staff. Also, partnering with a managed services provider (MSP) means having an extra team of IT experts able to troubleshoot and remediate issues that arise. With remote monitoring and management (RMM), backup and disaster recovery (BDR) and cloud computing, you’ll have access to the latest technology and business-grade solutions to help you maintain uptime and profitability.
2. On-Demand Labor
The cost of staffing an IT department is significant. It’s a line item that many businesses can afford to get rid of, but it may be preventing you from being productive and profitable. With managed services, however, you have access to outsourced IT labor, meaning you can focus your existing human resources where you need them most. For many companies having an Internal IT Staff is not possible and having the benefits of an in-house IT staff benefits without the costs is a significant business advantage over your competitors. Additionally, MSPs have access to tools like Network Operations Centers (NOCs) and RMM software that makes managing your IT environment much easier and less costly than hiring more internal staff.
3. Managed Service is NOT just for larger companies. SMB’s can take advantage of Managed Services as well.
Small businesses don’t have the luxury of having an internal IT staff. Having a Managed Services company partner with you allows SMB’s to take advantage of IT without the added cost. SMB’s can hire a Managed Services Provider and no longer wonder what their IT costs are going to be for the month. Quality Managed Service Providers can offer Support, AntiVirus Software, and Remote Access with a guaranteed monthly cost. No surprises and businesses can confidently know what their IT costs will be monthly. See firsthand how Northern Arizona IT, LLC can save your business money.

There is a new security vulnerability sweeping the interwebs that you may have heard of. It goes by many names like Spectre, Meltdown, Kaiser, KPTI, the Intel Bug and a few other names not suitable for this email.
This vulnerability exists in all processors in ALL computers; both PC and Apple and has been proven to be present in smartphones as well. Northern Arizona IT is on top of the news and monitoring the situation. In THEORY, this security hole COULD allow malicious programs to see your data and POTENTIALLY use it or copy it onto the Internet. It’s important to note that NO widespread exploits have been reported thus far.
What do you need to do?
At the moment, nothing. Chip manufacturers are working with Microsoft, Apple, Android, etc. to shut down the vulnerability. Frankly, it was first detected over a year ago and patches are close to being delivered. In the coming days and weeks, if you are NOT a Northern Arizona IT Partner, pay attention to Operating System updates (Windows, Apple OS, Android) and don’t put off installing them. It may take a while to install but as always, err on the side of security. We are always here to help install these if you desire.
If you ARE a Northern Arizona IT Managed Services Partner, we’re already taking these steps for you. In addition, the antivirus we provide is also already aware of the vulnerability and will be compatible with any patches that Microsoft or Apple rolls out.
If you’d like to discuss this alert further, always feel free to call or email. We’d be happy to talk about your situation, or better yet get you signed up for our Managed Services Suite of products that ensure you are always up to date with the latest security and antivirus defenses.
